Club
History
As part of the RAF Association Amsterdam Branch, Club Limburg, now affectionately
known as RAFA Club Limburg, was successfully inaugurated on 25th February
1985.
In the earlier years and often in the years following, it was variously
referred to as RAFA Regio Limburg, RAFA Limburg and RAFA Zuid Limburg.
However today, Club Limburg is strongly affiliated to its mother branch
at Amsterdam.
The driving force behind the existence of the Club was very much down
to the efforts of Giel Verschueren and the late Lambert Beugels, both
ex-Royal Air Force volunteers during the war. Clearly it was their drive
and determination which eventually made it possible to foster comradeship
and fellowship with those RAFA members who lived in the Limburg area.
We are forever grateful to them.
Today RAFA Club Limburg boasts some 50 plus members. Some members are
located in the UK but their affection for the club is such that they
continue to pay their subscriptions regularly without attending any
gatherings. Average attendance at a monthly gathering is around 50%.
This enables the Club to meet its main aims of comradeship and fellowship
and, through various Club activities, raise funds to cover Welfare activities
in the UK and the Netherlands.
RAFA Club Limburg includes members whose historical contribution is
well recognised; such as Mrs Leyssen for her work in the Resistance
in WW2, returning aircrew to the UK, Mr Hendrix, a former Spitfire pilot,
Mr Schade, who served in No.322 (Dutch) Squadron, the late Mr Beugels
who served at RAF Cardington and Mr Verschuren who served at RAF Willingale.
The Club is fortunate in that it is also well supported by serving Royal
Air Force personnel from nearby JFC HQ Brunssum.
Gatherings in 1985 began in the Aero Club at Maastricht Airport but
the Club had to move to Air Service Limburg (ASL) premises owing to
Maastricht Airport widening its requirements for the management of the
Aero Club. A further move to the present location in Stein was brought
about by another management requirement with ASL and its lodger businesses.
The Club now meets at Trefcentrum Kerensheide, Schineksstraat 11, 6171
AM Stein, The Netherlands on the third Monday of each month although
this date is sometimes changed to avoid clashes with the Netherlands
national calendar – such as Carnival etc. We do not meet in the
summer months of June, July and August. Club Limburg does not own the
premises but the excellent facilities are located on the ground floor
which is especially beneficial to our older members.
